Backgrounds Gallery

Whereas the characters are the actors in storyboards, the backgrounds are the stage upon which they emote. Visual development artwork is often times that's not always the case, especially in the early days of a production. Sometimes it works in the reverse, where the backgrounds are informed by the storyboards. In either case, coming up with the settings and backdrops is part of the story artists job.
